INTRODUCING GIDDY AUNT - Mid 20th Century a Speciality for this Shop
Giddy Aunt is a small shop where they sell authentic pieces up to the 1980's, with mid 20th century their speciality. They also have their own range of retro clothes. Open Monday -Saturday 10.30 till 5pm. Donna Hole tells us more...
What inspired you to launch this as your business?
While on maternity leave I decided it was now or never, Id always wanted a vintage shop and used my background in women's history and my life long fascination with my late Nana Bobby's fantastic tales of her life to inspire me to open Giddy Aunt.
What drew you to "vintage"?
Aunty Donna has always loved and worn vintage! Since my days as an art student in the late 1980's, vintage, especially the 50's has been my style of choice. I've always been fascinated with the cut and styling of vintage fabric and love the social history attached to vintage clothes, every item tells a tale (or two!).
Where do the majority of your customers come from?
The majority of my customers are local to Pembrokeshire and the surrounding counties. And, as we are in a very tourist area I have many return customer who make a visit to Giddy Aunt an important part of their holiday.
What is the most popular era or types of goods of those you sell in your shop?
My customers love the mid century era, our most popular items are 50's items and accessories with 60's being popular with the chaps.
Do you also sell online?
We do sell online, our website is dedicated to our own line of retro clothes. Our vintage is exclusive to the shop.
What has been the highlight for your business over the past year?
Over the past year we have opened our men's wear department 'Bob's Yer Uncle' downstairs and have also run a successful Kickstarter campaign to update our website and run a professional photoshoot. We have also been successful with a Local Investment Fund Grant and a lottery loan form Pembrokeshire lottery for IT and studio equipment allowing Giddy Aunt to grow and develop.
Over the coming years I would love to see Giddy Aunt develop into a must be destination for anyone wanting a true vintage experience, in the last two years three more vintage and antique businesses, including a tea room have moved into Market Square where we operate from, this has made the Square a destination. I hope that the quality of goods and the exceptional customer service we offer will continue to be a draw.
Hopefully the vintage industry will continue to grow and develop as it has over previous years, as vintage style has become much more acceptable in the mainstream, in all walks of life and design there will always be a need for true vintage discoveries and the stories those items hold.
