Russell & Brown's is a freelance vintage hairstyling company based in Liverpool, led by Amie Russell and Carl Brown. We find out more with owners & pioneers Carl Brown & Amie Russell

What do you enjoy most about running your business?

We most enjoy the freedom to be creative with new people everyday. From fashion designers, budding brides and the individual vintage enthusiast our work really keeps us busy! We really believe our styles are much more than simply hair dressing, we see our work as an art form and an expression of our own and our clients creativity. We love exploring the history of style and fashion and getting inspired by the iconic looks of the past to transform the ladies of the present and seeing our clients go away happy and looking and feeling fabulous!

What drew you to "vintage" over other hair &/or makeup styles?

For us, vintage is the foundation of fashion especially in relation to hair styling. Each era has informed todays current trends in their own unique way, from the feisty flapper girl fashions of the 20s to the sky scraping styles of the 60s, the variety is endless. We never wanted to have to restrict our creative process to fit in with this or that months current fashion trends but rather to open up a whole history of hair to our clients and that's why vintage was the obvious option for us and whats more, vintage styles are just simply stunning.

Which is your favourite era/look and why?

We each have a special soft spot for separate eras.

  • For Amie, the 1920s represents an era of pure elegance underpinned by a sense of rebellion and raunchiness, she just loves crafting beautiful finger wave looks and bohemian chignon styles.
  • For Carl, the 1940s stands out as a favourite. He loves to create voluptuous victory roll styles with swirling details and perfectly polished finishes.

What is the most popular service(s) from those you offer?

We offer a whole variety of services working both business to business, most especially with fashion designers for photoshoots, as well as business to customer, directly with our every day clients. Our most popular service however has to be our vintage bridal hair styling. There has been a huge growth in the trend for vintage inspired weddings over the last year or two and we have a steady stream of brides coming to us to get the Russell & Brown's treatment and be transformed into an amazing vintage vixen for their big day.

If you could style anyone past or present who would it be?

We constantly research the stars of the past to inspire our styles but if we had to choose one stand out star to style it would have to be the stunning Marlene Dietrich. Although Marlene isn't always the first choice for some when it comes to stand out stars of the past, we just simply love her. From her music, to her acting career she is just an icon. We love her creativity, her shock of blonde hair, her stand out make up look and her overall persona. She was fierce, and if there's one thing we love at Russell & Brown's its a lady with a bit of attitude!

How would you like to see your business grow & the Vintage Industry develop over the coming year(s)?

We our constantly expanding and developing our business. This year we have plans to open up our first vintage style hub which will serve as our very own vintage salon, training academy and on site photography studio. We are also seeking to develop our very own range of styling products bringing the Russell & Brown's brand to a wider audience and allowing our clients and fans to recreate their iconic styles back in their own homes. We want to bring vintage out of niche and into the realms of the mainstream fashion and style world. We are not creating fancy dress styles to be worn only for special occasions but rather offering a valuable and beautiful alternative to what is available currently on the high street. As mentioned earlier, vintage is the foundation of fashion and in our view this could be a valuable realisation that the wider vintage market could benefit from. Vintage opens up a history of hair and fashion to the consumer and doesnt restrict their choice, it allows people to explore their own uniqueness and self-expression and we'd love to see more vintage establishments on main shopping streets of major cities around the UK competing with big brands. In line with that, we'd love to see the development of a network of vintage traders who can work in collaboration with each other to further solidify the amazing vintage scene we have all laid the foundations down for already.

Anything else you'd like to add?

We are truly the most passionate people you could meet when it comes to vintage style and the development of our business. Russell & Brown's has become our life and we can't express how much we love doing what we do. We have pioneered the vintage hair scene in our home city of Liverpool and want to export what we have created here across the UK. We really feel we can bring a fresh approach to hair styling and gain the support of clients and big influencers in the fashion world who have not considered vintage as an option before.

Russell & Brown's is on a path to big things and we would love to have the support of the vintage world and the recognition of the National Vintage Awards in order to further our ability to succeed in the goals we have set out for ourselves.
