INTRODUCING THE OLD FILM COMPANY - Will they reel in an award?

The Old Film Company supply Super 8mm & Standard 8mm films, processing, telecine, projectors, cine cameras, editors, splicers and many accessories. They also have a large catalogue of classic movies for tradition projection. Rik Greening tells us more about the thrill of "reel" film...

What is your most popular product/service?

The most popular items are the second hand package movies as more and more people want to put on traditional film shows projecting real film on real film projectors in their homes. The package movies cater for all ages from Tom & Jerry to the Hollywood classic movies. With the classic Hollywood movies coming in specially edited abridge version to full length features to suit all pockets.

What inspired you to launch this as your business?

From the age of 9 I started my lifelong passion for the Super 8mm format and remember looking through my mum's Kay's catalogue at the Super 8mm projector and package movie pages and dreamed of one day owning my own movie projector. A few years later I managed to purchase a cheap kids toy projector and remember buying my first Super 8mm 200ft silent black & white Laurel & Hardy film from a newspaper advert and then played it over and over again. I saved my pennies and slowly purchased a Disney second hand Super 8mm film and remember putting on film shows for my friends and slowly adding more films to my collection. When I was a teenager I had a dream that I wanted to have my own Super 8mm company by the age of 40 and over the years turned this dream into a reality, and with the advent of digital it has just made me more determined to keep real film alive for future generations to enjoy in this digital generation of profit margins over quality.

What drew you to "vintage"?

What drew me to "vintage" is my love for all things 1940s and quality. To me the word "vintage" represents quality and honesty.
If you could supply any individual, business or event with your product/services who or which would it be? To me my everyday individual 'bread & butter' customers are the most important, not some faceless large corporation that wants the product/services but doesn't want to pay. If my individual customers no matter how small are happy then I've done my job which makes me happy.

How would you like to see your business grow & the Vintage Industry develop over the coming year(s)?

The next stage of growing the business is to go on the road and offer a true vintage style 'Pearl & Dean' cinema at village halls and events such as the various 1940s events up and down the country and mix my two passions. Frustratingly when I see an advert for a film show in a village hall and on that advert is a picture of a movie projector and you pay your entrance fee, sit down to enjoy the film and it turns out to be nothing more than a projected DVD! I want to offer a real film experience with actual real film running through a real film projector putting on a traditional cinema presentation with the Pearl & Dean adverts, trailers, a featurette followed by the interval complete with a vintage style usherette before the feature presentation.

I would like to see the Vintage Industry develop with tighter guidelines on what is 'Vintage' as I feel the word vintage does get overused and misused and I would like to see the Vintage Industry associated with quality products and services.
